It is best to photograph newborns within the first two weeks of their birth! They change so quickly, and sometimes after two weeks they have lost some of the characteristics you fall in love with the first time you hold your baby! I do however understand that events arise that will not allow for photos during the first two weeks of life, so I am flexible in working with you to meet your needs! I want you to be happy and have memories that you can cherish for a lifetime!
Being a mom myself, I do understand that your child's newborn session may be the first outing since you bring your bundle of joy home from the hospital! Please try not to worry and stress about your session and know that I am very understanding if you are running late! I do ask that if you are running late, to just let me know with a phone call or text (262-993-1381).
Newborn sessions can vary from baby to baby, so I let your baby run the show! Here are some tips that will help me in making your baby as comfortable and relaxed as possible for his/her session:
* To get those sleepy, squishy newborn photos that everyone loves so much, it is best to feed your baby shortly after you arrive to my home studio. While at the session, please do not feel rushed while feeding. It is best to let baby take his/her time and have a full belly during the session. Again, your baby will be running the show, so when he/she needs an additional feeding during the session, we can take a break to fill that little belly again! If you are formula feeding, make sure to bring extra formula just in case. Babies typically will feed more frequently during the newborn photo session.
* Your baby’s safety is very important to me! Because of this, I take the time to settle your baby into the pose before I even attempt to take the photos. Not all babies will go into every pose, so there are no guarantees that we will capture every pose. I will try my best, but ultimately I follow your baby’s comfort level with each and every post. It can be useful to have your baby use a pacifier during the time that I am trying to settle him/her into the pose. * If you are willing to let your baby have a pacifier, I recommend bringing one along. If you have the one that the hospital usually provides, that one is a good one to bring along as it usually doesn’t leave any marks or indentations around your baby’s mouth.
* Please keep in mind that I will be keeping the room we are working in nice and toasty so that your baby will be comfortable and sleepy even with very little clothes on. With this being said, you will probably want to dress in loose, airy attire (as I will also be dressed in). If you are interested in parent, family, or sibling photos, we will plan on doing those photos at the beginning of the session, before the warmth of the studio has its effects on you. So feel free to bring along a change of clothing for after your portion of the photos.
* What to wear for parent/family photos: the key word for how to dress is to coordinate your outfits. No need to have everyone wearing matching outfits, after all everyone is unique in their personality! My suggestion is to find a beautiful outfit for mom that she feels amazing in! Then use the colors/design/textures in that outfit to coordinate the rest of the family. I have wraps of every color that we can wrap baby in (or baby can be sans clothing/wrap). I always suggest sticking to more neutral colors (whites, tans, greys, blacks) to create a timeless image. Avoid busy patterns and bright/neon colors. I have white, tan, and grey backdrops for parent/family poses. My home studio is a no shoes studio, so if you would like to wear shoes for your photos, please bring those along and make sure the bottoms of the shoes are clean (so they do not mark up my backdrops-thank you!).
* There are cute photos we can take where only your arms and hands will be photographed, so please come to the session with clean and trimmed nails. Brightly painted nails and lots of jewelry can distract from the main focus of the photo (your little angel!!), so don’t worry about scheduling a manicure until after the newborn session!!
* I use a space heater and white noise to help calm and settle your baby during the session. I have a variety of headbands, blankets, wraps, clothing, and props for your session. All items are cleaned and disinfected between sessions for the comfort of you and your baby. If you have any items that you would like included in the session, please bring those along! * Newborn photo sessions usually last from 2-3 hours. For most siblings, that time becomes unbearable! I suggest one of the parents staying for the newborn solo photos, while the other parent takes the older sibling elsewhere during this time. The less people and commotion, the better the session usually goes. If a circumstance arises where your older children must stay at the session, I suggest bringing along quiet activities or toys to keep your older child entertained for the 2 ½ hours when they will not be needed in the photos.
* If you have not already, please complete the Newborn Session Questionnaire (not needed for model calls) and return it to me so I can make your baby’s newborn photos unique and special to you!
*My home and studio is pet friendly. Please let me know if your pet will be joining in on your session.
Please let me know of any questions or concerns you have. I look forward to your newborn session, and I hope you do too!
