Family Photo Prep Tips and Tricks
What to wear
For a beautiful, cohesive family photo you want to make sure that you all coordinate your outfits. Avoid matching in the same exact outfits (although that can be cute for children!). There are so many color options for a beautifully coordinated color palette! This family chose navy as their main color and coordinated with tan. It is also great to have layers and textures to the outfits to add extra visual appeal.
So what colors should you choose for your family photos? Moms usually put themselves last, but when deciding on a color palette, put mom first! Find a great outfit that flatters mom, and coordinate the rest of the family to her outfit. I am always excited to help my clients pick out color palettes, so do not hesitate to ask!!
Tricks before your session
For the best possible outcome at your session, it may be helpful to follow some of these tricks:
*Practice smiling with your young children in front of the mirror. This can be so much fun and easy to do while they are brushing their teeth!
*Make sure your children are feeling well the day of the session. Colds, ear aches, belly aches, all of those things are good reasons to reschedule. It is hard to be happy on the outside when you don't feel well on the inside.
*A well rested child is more likely to be excited to participate during a photo session. If they are a napper, make sure they get a good nap, and wake them at least an hour prior to leaving your home.
*It is a great idea to have a light meal or snack before your session. Just like newborn sessions, full bellies make for happy little ones.
Tips for during your session
When photographing any combination of adults and children, it works best for the adults (and older children) to just keep looking at the camera and smiling. Allow me to get the kiddo's attention. It never fails that the little one will give me a beautiful smile at the exact moment that mom or dad looks at the child. Relax, and trust me to get your child's attention. I promise you will be happier with the results that way!
